Thursday & Friday, 5 & 6 September 2019. The niche concept and how species coexist within ecosystems is the focus of today's classwork. The video below will introduce you to how different species use the same habitat at the same time. The goal is to see the concept of niche and how in some cases, the niche is split up (aka partitioned) to make use of all opportunities within an ecosystem. There is an electronic copy of the student handout below so you can see the data in Figure 2 in color.
Here is the order you should approach today:
1. look over your student handout for 5 minutes
2. watch the video of how Dr. Pringle studies the diets of the focal species
3. complete the reflection questions about the concept of niche and how it works
4. hand-in the completed packet

Wednesday, 3 & 4 September 2019. Today's work will introduce you to the basic concepts we will use in our ecology unit such as niche, organism, species, population, community, and ecosystem. The order of activities today will go as follows:
1. Lab safety quiz
2. "Niche: Every living thing has a role to play" reading and question set. I encourage you all to use a yellow highlighter from the box on the front counter to highlight key elements of the reading before answering the questions on the last page of the packet.
3. "Which Niche" activity. Use the 4 different ecosystem cards to get a better understanding of the concept of niche and how organisms take on specific roles that aren't duplicated in the same place within an ecosystem. Follow the directions closely for what you need to do on the front of the sheet. For the tables on the back, use any one of the species found on any of the ecosystem cards you look over to get a better idea of the concept of niche as we'll use it. Use the information in the "Niche" reading and/or your Chromebooks to search for acceptable answers on the web. In case you need the ecosystem cards to finish the work at home, they are at the back of the "Which Niche?" PDF file below. Have fun!
Additional Resource: There is a Bozeman Science video clip to help you to better understand the concept of niche if you're still uncertain.
